The Storm Surge Barrier on the Oosterschelde is the most innovative and expensive part of the Delta Works and could easily be decribed as the 'eighth wonder of the world'. The former artificial island of Neeltje Jans that was used for the construction of the Oosterschelde Dam, became the most popular tourist attraction in Zeeland soon after it was built. Under the title of 'Deltapark Neeltje Jans', the artificial island has since become a unique and versatile feature land.
Visitors to the island are shown two thousand years of hydraulic engineering in the Delta Expo exhibition hall. The Delta Finale film tells the story of the design and the construction of the Storm Surge Barrier. Visitors are able to walk across the storm surge barrier with its gigantic doors. The unique Water Pavilion provides a clear overview of all water manifestations. This special building was awarded a prize for architecture in 1998. In 1989 the Natuurmonumenten (Nature Reserve society) and the Zeeuws Landschap (Zeeland Landscape society) set up the island as a natural dune area, with dunes, wet hollows, a channel and a bird island. A visit to the Neeltje Jans dune area is an unforgettable experience.
On the reception of the Paardekreek, you can buy your tickets with a discount of 15%.
